Library 101: Citation Made Easy from tgaletti on Vimeo.
Over the past couple of weeks, as part of an inquiry about Michael Morpurgo, we revisited a number of inquiry skills, including the various phases and the actions/tasks we complete within an inquiry cycle. We began by having a brief look at his books, sharing our observations and wonderings, as well as brainstorming how we might find answers to our questions (TUNING IN).
As a first step of FINDING OUT about the author and his works, we had a closer look at his books, sorting them into categories. You quickly noticed themes, i.e. animals, war, journeys, and myths and legends. It also allowed us to talk about keywords and how they help us in efficiently searching for information in our online catalog and other online databases and search engines.
Next, we revisited how to search World Book Online and our online catalog (OPAC) - the online catalog both for books (LIBRARY catalog) and websites (WebPath Express). You then got to practice using these and other online resources available through the Primary Portal in searching for information on Michael Morpurgo (FINDING OUT).
To record the information you discovered, and to match it with the questions it answered (FINDING OUT/SORTING OUT), we used a shared data gathering grid. As you learned more about Michael Morpurgo, new questions emerged (GOING FURTHER).
Here are three tutorials you can go back to anytime you need a refresher on how to search our online resources.
BTW - you can find these and various other library related tutorials on our only2clicks page under the Library 101 tab.
This past week, we revisited our responsibilities in the use of information, how we can avoid plagiarising by giving credit to the original creator of the information, image or idea, and how to do this by using the EasyBib add-on in Google docs.
And here is a brief tutorial for you whenever you need a refresher on how to create a bibliography with the help of the EasyBib add-on.
Thank you for all your hard work over the past weeks, G5 students! As promised, the next couple of sessions are dedicated to exploring Michael Morpurgo's writing by reading The Butterfly Lion together. I have missed our reading sessions and look very much forward to finally continue to share this beautiful story with you. The best is yet to come in the story, you'll see!
