During the past week, students also made some first discoveries related to call numbers. Call numbers are located on the spine of each book, indicating the book’s respective place on the shelf. Students thereby learned that the call numbers of fiction books consist of letters only (e.g. E BRO, E CAN) while the call numbers of nonfiction books consist of numbers and letters (e.g. 595 KAL, 599 STO). As we continue our exploration of fiction and nonfiction books, we will also venture into material arrangement and the organizational structure of books. |
In all, we are addressing thereby benchmark skills in both Standard 1 (Using Inquiry to Build Understanding) and Standard 2 (Pursuing Personal and Aesthetic Growth), such as for example, understanding the basic organizational structure of books and the library, differentiating between fiction and nonfiction resources, identifying call numbers, making connections between literature and own experiences, listening to fiction and nonfiction books, demonstrating comprehension of stories read out loud, and collaborating with a partner to share information. |
