Last week our PK2 students were inspired to doodle after watching an interview with Mo Willems in which he shared that he and his family sit at a paper covered table each night to chat and doodle. We enjoyed watching the author and illustrator demonstrate this with his interviewer, the host of the TODAY show (to watch the interview, click on this link). In addition, the video showed us once again that Mo Willems doesn't just write and illustrate books that make us laugh but that he is generally a really funny person (something we had wondered about at the beginning of our inquiry). Spending time doodling on a big piece of paper in the library, while chatting about Mo Willems and his books, was a wonderful way to end this inquiry. It allowed students to think about what they had learned as well as share their learning in a creative and fun way. I enjoyed especially listening to the conversations happening, as students talked about the characters from the books they were drawing (the Pigeon, Piggie and Gerald were the favourites). From their conversations as well as from the huge demand of Mo Willems books during check out, we could tell that through this inquiry students discovered a favourite author (and illustrator) and an author whose style they can recognise among other books. Further, students demonstrated growing understanding that authors and illustrators go through a process as they create books and that we, the readers, can learn from them for our own writing and illustrating. Well done, PK2 students - and thank you, Mo Willems, for the wonderful books you create!

In our author inquiry about Mo Willems, PK2 students brain stormed this week, where we might find answers to our questions. They came up with a whole list of ideas: Go to the library Look at his books Read his books Visit him and see how he writes his books Ask the author Ask another person - someone who is his friend or knows about him Computer Since we had already shared some of his books as read-alouds and allowed students to look through his books, we decided to watch a video on the computer (see below). Afterwards, students shared what they had learned about the author and illustrator from watching this video: He writes also Cat the Cat. (Other books we already know are the Piggie & Elephant books, the Pigeon books and Edwina, the Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct.) He writes for kids. He likes to write about friends. Cat the Cat is for little kids. He draws and writes at the same time. (He doesn't write first and then draw.) We will continue looking for information in other sources to find answers to all of our questions. During this inquiry, therefore, students are not only introduced to an author and his books, they also follow a modelled inquiry process. They practise asking questions and experience where and how to look for and find answers to these questions. As mentioned in other posts, the big ideas in these author inquiries remain the same, no matter the grade level the students are in. What varies is the level of support and guidance students receive in going through the inquiry. |
