From the first read-aloud of a Graeme Base book, our third graders were hooked! Especially intrigued by the exquisite illustrations that are such a vital part of each of his stories, there has been much interest for the books as well as the person that creates them, Australian children's author and illustrator Graeme Base. Clues hidden in the illustrations challenge the reader to pay close attention to words and pictures while reading or listening to one of his stories. In particular The Eleventh Hour had a group of students up in excitement as they solved a secret code hidden in one of the pictures. I love seeing this kind of excitement over books! |
