Our youngest readers and inquirers continue to explore fiction and nonfiction books in the library. At the beginning of each of their library visits, we introduce two books about the same animal (in the picture above for example two books about dogs), one fiction and one nonfiction. We encourage students to share with us which of these books they would choose to learn about the respective animal and which of the books they would choose if they wanted to enjoy a story. Students are doing an excellent job in identifying the book for its respective purpose. More and more students are also confidently using the right terminology with it, naming it "fiction" or "nonfiction" respectively. "Fiction or nonfiction?" are our PK1 students asking in the picture below - as we often ask them now when they bring the books they have chosen to check out. It's wonderful hearing our students' growing confidence in using this terminology and in identifying the kind of books they have chosen. In addition to becoming experts in differentiating between fiction and nonfiction books, it is wonderful to observe with how much thought and care students are now choosing their books and how much they enjoy looking through books together. We have seen so much growth in this area this year and our PK1 students are now a little community of readers who share and enjoy books together. Well done, PK1!

Our youngest library visitors from PK1 continue to learn and grow as they visit the library each week. Especially enjoyed are the read-alouds, with the stories we select increasing in length. As you can see in the pictures below, our PK1 students are listening attentively. Seeing how the overall participation has gone up, especially when we talk about the books we share, is a wonderful example of their growing confidence. Students enjoy sharing their personal connections with a story. When reading a book about a giraffe for example, many students excitedly shared that they had already seen a real giraffe in the zoo. They could therefore also tell right away, that a story that included a pink and a green giraffe couldn't be real. This was a great lead into our exploration of the two main categories of books in our library: fiction and nonfiction/ informational books through paired read-alouds. After reading the fiction picture book The Short Giraffe, we followed up with an informational book by the title Giraffes from the Animal Safari series. This gave students a first taste of the differences, in appearance and content as well as regarding the different purposes these books are used for. Another big step forward is in the area of book selection. PK1 students spend more and more time exploring and looking through their books, sometimes together with a friend, before deciding what book to check out. Students have also begun to ask us for particular books if they don't find what they are looking for on our display. And last but not least, PK1 students are still enjoying a story in Mandarin during each library visit. So lots and lots of learning happening in the library as our PK1 students visit each week. I am sure our youngest library visitors are happy to tell you more about it in their own words.
