With our Literacy Week theme "Our World, Our Stories", we wanted to celebrate authors and readers near and far, encouraging our students not only to read what others had written but also writing and sharing their own stories. One such engagement was provided on the last day of Literacy Week during our multiage literacy activities. Using the ComicBook App on the iPad, we asked students to create stories - about Literacy Week or any other topic of interest. Seeing students work and collaborate in groups with students from different grade-levels (and teachers), was not only wonderful to observe but also brought about some pretty creative stories. Some were directly linked to Literacy Week, others weren't. But all of them told a special story, supported by the various features the application offers such as headings, speech bubbles, stickers, comic-style picture texture and more.
I loved discovering through these stories how much students enjoyed Literacy Week ("Literacy Week Rocks!"), how they feel about reading and books in general (one of my favourite comments in the comic below, "Even the cool guys have books") and of course some favourite books getting featured in the stories (no surprises that there were references to the super popular Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey and David Walliams' Gangsta Granny). Here just a few examples. If you are interested in seeing more, just stop by the library to browse through the folder we put together with all stories created during the event.
