G2 Students continue their study of color relationships by responding to the flag paintings of Jasper Johns. Students first drew flags of their home countries in their sketchbooks; studying the color wheel, students then drew a second flag using the opposite colors. Finally students used sponges to create prints of their home country flags with unique pallets of color to show what they have learned. G4 Students began their studies of cubism with a self portrait using six xeroxed photos taken from three different perspectives. Students deconstructed their own faces to create a collage, and then used the collage to create a drawing. From the drawings, students will be creating a clay relief. At each stage of the project, the work becomes more abstracted, as students try to show different sides of themselves in true cubist style. After looking at a few paintings by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, G1 students created art inspired by his work. Students first painted a background with curved and wandering lines, and then used different papers to collage dots onto the background, in response to what they saw in Hundertwasser's work. Lastly, students used different drawing materials to add patterns and fine line work. In conjunction with the UOI Who We Are, in which students study how individual body systems work together, G3 have been getting creative with the skeletal system in art class. Students first practiced drawing the skeleton before creating a skeleton collage, inspired by Dia De Los Muertos artwork. PK2 Created collages of their faces to show their similarities and differences as a grand finale to the UOI "Who We Are." Photographs of the children with their collages will be used for the front and back covers of the All About Me books which students will begin sewing together later this week. G5 Students have been learning about different arts and making art based on ancient Chinese inventions. Students first began with paper making and are now making blocks of type for printing. In this part of the unit student learn how to reverse the design and cut the print block to create a letter of the alphabet. The print block can then be used for many different types of signage. It's been a cooperative learning event in the art room this week as students used all of the print block letters to create signage. |
